Enjoying the end of 2011

Life was pretty low key for us after seeing family on Christmas and Boxing Day. I worked 5 shifts in that week, counting New Year's Day... that one ended up turning into an overtime shift as well, so I did 16 hours in a row. (Knowing that I don't have any shifts in the immediate future was motivation enough to get through that.) Scott was home from work that week, and spent a lot of time with the kids. Here's Nora getting into mischief...

Uncle Richard and Auntie Linda came for dinner one evening with Misha. Can dogs have cousins?

Nora is not afraid of dogs... yet we couldn't get all three of them to "smile" at the same time!

Nora's new baking set has been a popular gift. She's "cracking" eggs all the time now, which tend to be underfoot...

Watching the Christmas train is so much fun for Nora. She only derails it occasionally...

New Year's Day the family was back to Nana and Papa's for a delicious meal. My parents were over as well... I was sorry to have missed the party!

Nora's already figured out Papa's gift of the digital photo frame... "sliding" the pictures over by hand.

Or there's the remote control option...

What a monkey, but a smart one!

Happy New Year from Nora!
Wishing you all a special year ahead...

Boxing Day

(For some reason, my last two posts are in reverse order... just so you know there's a new one there since you last looked.) Christmas carried on into Boxing Day, after I had a sleep from my night shift. :) We headed over to Scott's parents' home to enjoy a Karpiuk family gathering. It was a very special time, especially as Dad was home for a weekend pass for the first time. Everyone was so glad to be together.

The happy couple!
 Uncle Doug and Cameron
 Cameron, Auntie Louise and Julie
 Myles and Emily
Nora has a lot of fun at Nana and Papa's house, but we just have to keep an eye on her... too many things to get into!

Thomas enjoys a cuddle with Misha, Uncle Richard and Auntie Linda's dog.

Charles and Papa save room for dessert...

Almost all together... we missed Stewart and Charlene, up in Alaska, and Richard's son Lucas, wife Lesley and baby Liam! You were in our thoughts, for sure.

 Hanging out, watching hockey...
Nora would rather do wrestling with Thomas...

The gift of family, of belonging no matter what, of being loved and accepted... that is an incomparable blessing for which we give thanks. Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Pre-Christmas Happenings ~ Dec.12 -24th

Christmas-time is a wonderful time of year to get together with close friends and family, which we were thankful to do. We started off the season with a wonderful Christmas banquet with our friends from where we used to attend church in Langley. Sadly, I only got these couple of photos of Nora, who was enamored with climbing the stairs continually. She looks like she's practicing some crazy dance moves, as in the style of "Elaine" from Seinfeld...

Here Nora and I are visiting friend Donna Lynn, who introduced the family's latest pets to us. Nora was thrilled to meet the kittens, but I can't say the same about them. Let's just say it was a short visit before they had to "go to sleep". Then, Nora kept reminding us to be quiet.

Why don't the kitties like me?
With time off from school happening earlier in December this year, we seemed to have more time for daytime visits with friends. Anna and Julie came over for lunch one day...

The girls were always looking different directions for photos, but they're both so cute together. Nora gets a little possessive at times, as she is when any little ones visit.

Children born in this digital age are quick to learn that they can see themselves on the camera...

No, Nora isn't tackling Anna at the front door but rather giving her a farewell hug...

A rare site at my house, a gathering of little girls. These blondies are the sweet children of my nursing school friends, Laura and Heather. It's always a treat to get together.

Laura's new dog came to visit as well. Rosie's staring him down... even if she is just a big chicken.

One of Nora's favourite things to do now is to help bake. If she detects any activity like that about to happen, suddenly she is pushing a chair alongside to join me.

Perhaps it's because she's figured out that there are tasty treats to sample when it's all done!

Auntie Darlene came by on Christmas Eve afternoon to spoil us once again. Nora is equating her visits with good things. We all enjoyed Darlene's baking...

Here's a special Christmas Mickey mouse for Nora, how fun!

"Reading" about Baby Jesus with Darlene... just like when we used to teach preschool Sunday school together.

Christmas Eve we headed off to church...

The candles lit at the front of the auditorium were very pretty, but definitely not child-friendly. Scott and the boys were on high alert keeping Nora off the stage! (I was playing the carols...)

Merry Christmas, Mom and Dad!

A wonderful gift... a second Christmas with Nora. Sweet dreams, everyone!

A Merry Christmas Day ~2011

Like it always does, Christmas came together with all the details, however last-minute, to be a special day of celebrating Christ's birth with family, and calls to friends. We typically have a slow start, with having breakfast first. With the boys being older, they are pretty patient now. Nora didn't know any better, at least this year... My parents joined us for a brunch style meal of blueberry crepes, which was very delicious.

We squeezed into the front room between the tree and the piano... cozy and festive. It forces the boys to be in closer contact than they might normally choose... it's nice.

Lewis was very sweet to make everyone thoughtful, original homemade gifts. James had a good laugh once he realized that Lewis had made him a mouse-pad for his computer. Lewis takes it all in good humour, and we're always happy to see James grinning. :)

A game inspired from one of our favourite movies, "Diary of a Wimpy Kid"... you wouldn't want to get the "cheese touch"... Nora had her own touch, helping everyone open their gifts. She definitely enjoyed herself.

Charles is always happy to get new clothes while  Rosie is always happy to be with Charles!

Because we always forget, James was asked to videotape. We'll see how he did in about ten years when we finally view the video...

James is the kind of guy that will always say "Nothing..." when being asked as to what he might like for a gift. Makes it a challenge, but hopefully he will enjoy a camera on his trip to Europe at Spring Break. (He also got a passport holder, this book courtesy of my online Amazon.ca shopping, and an ice scraper for any future vehicle of his own... so he might consider getting more specific with his gift list!)

Lewis' gift to Scott and I was a "Portable fan", which is quite ingenious despite needing some work on it's cosmetic design. :)  We will give you a demonstration when you come by sometime...

A quick photo of Scott, as being the camera-man for the day he didn't get into many photos himself!

A very amusing moment was when Lewis pulled out the gift that he had made and wrapped for himself. All those weeks working secretly in his room... and here I thought the gift was for us! Notice where the box is from?!

"Mailed from China...."
Based on a ball machine idea, the ball rolls down each letter of Lewis' name to come out the bottom. He and Grandpa later installed this onto his bedroom wall as a shelf. The reason he made a gift for himself was because he knew that Dad bought his own Christmas gift... a camera flash. Lewis didn't quite realize that it was on my behalf. Anyway, we all had a good laugh...

Grandpa enjoyed the finished product, especially as he had given advice to his young apprentice in the process.

Nora received a very special gift of Disney princess "Mulan". This one may need to stay on the shelf for a year or two, as it's so nice.

Did you know Chuck Norris dropped by our house? :) Thomas still enjoys his one-liners.

Now if only the weather would get cooler to get to wear hats outside...

Enjoying together time... being so thankful for our children, especially on days like today.

An awesome gift for everyone... a keyboard for the basement, that only has 700+ voices. These two composed a song together in the afternoon, so fun!

After an afternoon nap, we headed over to Rob and Kellie's house for dinner. Family friends Joan and Vera joined us there. Was so wonderful not to cook the meal this year. Thanks!

The younger boys with their cousins, and Luna.

A second round of gift opening... Nora is very focused and loves every part of it.

Seeing the older boys come down to her level is sweet, too.

After eating a delicious meal, we headed home a happy family. I worked the night-shift at 11 pm, and it was thankfully pretty quiet. Hope you all had a wonderful day also. :)
